This is the day we declared our independence from England back in 1776. (You rat bastards trying to tax us hard-working colonials without giving us due representation in the English government! Evil or Very Mad) July 4th is more formally known as American Independence Day. While the "we're our own country" movement and rebellion among the American colonialists had begun quite some time prior, this was the day it was formally recognized by our leaders of the time. The American Revolutionary War was already well underway, but it was at this moment on July 4th, 1776 that there was no turning back for our newly-declared country. It was either win our independence or die trying. Up until that point there were plenty of aristocrats who wanted to make peace with England to more or less save their own asses as Britain had a HUGE advantage over us.

The American Revolutionary War is something I have a big interest in because many of the key battles were fought in my neck of the woods. The Battle Of Saratoga, for instance, was the turning point in the war itself. It took place only 25 minutes to the north of me in, you guessed it, Saratoga. These days Saratoga is known for summer horse racing/gambling by the middle-aged and for being an incredible party town on the weekends by the college-aged. (I can confirm the latter! Smile) In the middle of town there's a huge park which is a portion of the original Saratoga battleground. My home area of Albany was a key pivotal area in the Revolutionary War as well.

For all the flak France gets today for being a pussy, back then they really bailed us out and helped us win our independence. One hundred years after we declared our independence, France gave our country the Statue Of Liberty as a gift to commemorate that.

Happy 4th of July, my fellow Americans!
