| Over the past year-plus ESPN has been airing 30 For 30 - a series of hour-long documentaries on various great sports stories. Well, on Tuesday night, October 5th, 2010 at 8 PM Eastern time, it's the Red Sox' turn. Four Days In October is the story of the 2004 Boston Red Sox comeback from being down 3-0 in the ALCS to the Yankees. Here is the official site for Four Days In October with a few video trailers: http://30for30.espn.com/film/four-days-in-october.html | Quote: | | When the night of October 16, 2004 came to a merciful end, the Curse of the Bambino was alive and well. The vaunted Yankee lineup, led by A-Rod, Jeter, and Sheffield, had just extended their ALCS lead to three games to none, pounding out 19 runs against their hated rivals. The next night, in Game 4, the Yankees took a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning, then turned the game over to Mariano Rivera, the best relief pitcher in postseason history, to secure yet another trip to the World Series. But after a walk and a hard-fought stolen base, the cold October winds of change began to blow. Over four consecutive days and nights, this unlikely group of Red Sox miraculously won four straight games to overcome the inevitability of their destiny. Using extensive archive coverage from that week, Major League Baseball Productions will produce a film in "real-time" that takes an in-depth look at the 96 hours that brought salvation to Red Sox Nation and made baseball history in the process. |
Needless to say, I won't be in-game until after this airs as it appears to have TONS of footage that wasn't seen on national television, like locker room video, etc.. I've seen fan-made and official compilation videos of this 2004 comeback countless times so even to this day it remains fresh in my mind. I know all the big quotes, all the big moments, all the key players involved, all the aftermath. I am eager to see other angles to the comeback that I haven't seen before.
One of the happiest moments of my life. Those 2003 and 2004 Red Sox teams are my favorite sports teams ever. I have FOUR DVDs (two from each year) and I've watched them a billion times. Get me talking about them, about this 2004 comeback or whatever else, and I can talk for hours. Living in NY state, I used to hear tons of shit from Yankee fans, especially after 2003's Game 7 collapse. It's amazing how many Yankee fans that I knew before this comeback suddenly stopped being Yankee fans, and also how the ones who remained shut their mouths. What bandwagoners.
That Kevin Millar trailer "Don't Let The Sox Win Tonight" is very telling. Before Game 4 he actually went around telling anyone who would listen that if the Sox won that game, they'd get on a roll. It's freakin' remarkable how loose those Sox teams were. When Hideki Matsui was killing Sox pitching until Game 5 when Pedro put him on his ass with a head-high fastball, which caused him to disappear for the rest of the series performance-wise. When ARod actually slapped the ball out of Arroyo's hand in Game 6 and acted like he was a little angel for doing it. Curt Schilling making the infamous quote, "I can't think of anything more enjoyable than making 55,000 people from NY shut up", subsequently getting rocked in Game 1 as his ankle gave way, and then pitching on it in Game 6 of the ALCS (and also Game 2 of the 2004 World Series) after having the torn tendon sutured to his bone. That was one of the most heroic moments in sports for me. Big Papi. BIG PAPI. Motherfuckin' BIG PAPI.
What an awesome time to be a Sox fan, that was. I still have a Pedro bobblehead doll and my Manny Ramirez t-shirt which I wear frequently. I've never worn the 2004 Red Sox World Champions t-shirt that I have. It's still in perfect, unworn condition.______________________ |
