This update was hinted at way back in mid-October. Been meaning to start a thread about this but have been too lazy. (Sorry!) Here is what I've compiled about this upcoming "massive update" thus far:

PvE

Wintersday confirmed for December.

November weekend one time event that'll change the world and introduce the new island map. (See the Lost Shores here: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/releases/november-2012/)

On the new map... a new dungeon! Really big, gets harder to farther you get in

The new island is not a full-sized map, it's a medium small map that will play out a storyline. Not intended for big end-game expansion. Island is meant for more fun content. The Dungeon is meant to be added to expand end-game.

New rewards not seen before will be available on island.

They will be adding lots of things to do (they want a good variety) at max level so you can log in and say "Oh I feel like doing X, Y, and Z today)

Dungeon rewards are being actively worked on right now, and are also trying to make dungeons more fun to play.


Guilds

They are not actively working on Guild Halls, but they will keep this promise and it will come sometime down the line.

They are not working on housing right now, but they love housing and think it's fun.


sPvP

New sPvP map to be put in "beta" mode. Will be put in official tourney line-up if people like it.

They are working on (in somewhat near future): more incentive rewards beyond cosmetic (but he's not talking more about that right now), and other mandatory things for sPvP (I assume spectator, ladder, etc)

They have an entire team dedicated to sPvP working on content.

(Devpost on forum) A new sPvP Blog Post will come with the patch.


WvWvW

Not from interview, but Orbs will be removed


Other notes

Improve on messaging: getting word out to people (ex. notify people on events, etc)

(From Devpost on forum): Next balance patch is mid-November

They're constantly evaluating sPvP, WvWvW, PvE to make sure they're rewarding and enough to do in the game.

The Official GW2.com Lost Shores page has been updated with some additional details of the new content.

Additionally, MMORPG.com has a nice detailed sneak peek write-up of the update as well. Worth a read.

Important note from the MMORPG.com write-up:

Apparently there's a new version of armor coming out with more 'ability' than Exotic armor called Ascended armor which also has an 'Infusion' slot on it. Interesting. Very interesting. Smile I say 'ability' because it remains to be seen if the armor is actually more powerful technically than the exotic stats or not. Guess we'll see...

Already a lot of furor on Reddit about the Ascended armor and whether or not ANet is starting to introduce tiered gear grind.

Word is that ANet is going to explain what Ascended armor is all about in a blog post soon.

Personally, I'm all for these additions. The game is still young so much of it is in flux anyways. IMO most of the classes could use a bit more power overall. Much easier to add an extra tier of gear with upgraded stats (and tbh, it isn't really that much higher stats) than rebalance the entire fucking endgame so you aren't on your ass more than a porn star is, especially when playing solo or in dungeons.

Possibly for around each level frame, such as 10-20, backpieces for each specific armor class. Since 200 looks like just number rounded up/down, it would look like about the right number for all of the of class sets to be satisfied.
